ECU WORKSHOP TO DETAIL REVISION OF STATE’S WATER PLAN, HOW TO TRACK LEGISLATIVE, LEGAL WATER ISSUES
A free one-day workshop at East Central University on Oct. 7 [TUESDAY] will detail the in-progress revision of Oklahoma's Comprehensive Water Plan and include hands-on instruction in researching legislative and legal issues related to water rights in Oklahoma.
"Water in Oklahoma: Present and Future" will begin at 9 a.m. in the Raymond Estep Multimedia Center on the first floor of the University Center. Participants should register by Oct. 2 [THURSDAY]. On-site registration also is available.
Speakers for the morning session are Jeri Fleming, communications manager of the Oklahoma Water Resources Research Institute; Marilyn Jacobs, reference librarian for the Jan Eric Cartwright Memorial Library, Oklahoma Department of Libraries; and Clif Broadworth, reference librarian for the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
They will discuss legislation and water-planning issues in the state and show how to track state and federal legislation affecting all aspects of Oklahoma water, including state water rights, the statewide water plan and protecting existing water resources.
They also will show participants how to search the Oklahoma Statutes for current laws concerning water, including water in conservancy districts, water supplies, watercourses and wetlands, and how to find attorney general opinions about water issues.
The afternoon session, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the academic advisement lab in Danley Hall, will be a hands-on data workshop for Oklahoma and federal water databases, led by Clif Broadworth. Basic computer skills are needed for this session.
The workshop is sponsored jointly by the Water Research Institute, Oklahoma Department of Libraries, ECU's Linscheid Library and the ECU Institute for Environmental Sciences Education and Research.
