Hilary Sanchez, a 2009 graduate of Wetumka High School, has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar and will attend photo of Hilary SanchezEast Central University this fall.

The scholarship, awarded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, pays for undergraduate and graduate-level studies. Less than 5 percent of this year's more than 20,500 applicants were honored with the award.

Sanchez has been involved in the ECU Upward Bound program for four years and was enrolled in ECU classes as a concurrent student while still in high school. She has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average in her ECU courses and will have enough credits to be classified as a sophomore after the fall semester. She plans to major in biology.

Sanchez was recognized for her academic excellence this spring at the Recognition of Excellence Honors Ceremony sponsored by First United Bank and Trust Company, ECU and Seminole State College.
