Bert Miller, chief of East Central University's Police Department, was one of 24 law enforcement executives from across the country selected to participate in a National Campus Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence Against Women in Austin, Texas.
The institute was hosted in late July by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to enhance the response of campus police departments to crimes of violence against women and to support the departments' adoption of best practices.
Participants explored innovative approaches for investigating crimes of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. Additional attention centered on assessing agency performance and sharing challenges and solutions with law enforcement colleagues.
The institute also focused on planning and methods for effective resource allocation to help crime victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
The law enforcement executives developed action plans throughout the four-day institute in order to adopt new strategies for pro-active coordinated community collaboration after they returned to their departments.
Expenses for the participants to attend the institute were paid by a grant to the IACP from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women.
