Tyler Lee of Wetumka, a freshman at East Central University and a four-year member of ECU's Upward Bound Program from Moss High School, has received a $250 scholarship from the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs.

The association works toward educational opportunity for students in federal TRIO programs, which includes the Upward Bound program, and supports activities that enable participants to achieve their educational goals.

"If not for Upward Bound," Lee wrote in his scholarship application letter, "I might not have made it to college, or it would have at least been a more difficult road."

Scholarship recipients must demonstrate a potential for academic success as well as leadership, the desire for success, and extracurricular and community involvement.

Lee received a Masonic Award in the 8th grade. A member of the Academic Team at Moss since the 6th grade, he was the captain his senior year. He was a sophomore and junior class officer and the FFA chapter reporter as a junior. He also received a leadership award from ECU.

Lee, who is majoring in English at ECU, is the son of Ernie and Linda Lee of Wetumka.
