Barbara Tiry of Skiatook, a freshman majoring in speech education at East Central University, outshone all other Oklahoma Poetry Interpreters at the recent Kansas Wesleyan University Border Wars speech and debate tournament. Her poetry presented a humorous look at love.

Nineteen colleges and universities from five states participated in the tournament. Besides ECU, Oklahoma's contingent included the University of Oklahoma, Northeastern State University, Cameron University and Tulsa Community College.

Tiry finished fourth in Poetry Interpretation at the Border Wars. In only her third tournament, she picked up her third fourth-place award.

Joining Tiry in accumulating sweepstakes points for the Tigers were sophomore David Houchin, a mass communication (advertising/public relations) major, and senior Lauren Durbin a communications studies (speech education) major. Houchin competed in Extemporaneous, Impromptu, and After Dinner Speaking. Durbin competed in Informative Speaking and Communication Analysis.
