Student conductors will be featured in the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday [APRIL 29] in East Central University's Dorothy Summers Theatre.

"The concert will include our student conductors with the Symphonic Band, a Sousa march with the Wind Ensemble, and something fast and exciting by Shostakovich, also with the Wind Ensemble," said ECU band director Allen Correll. "And the Saied Awards will be presented to the outstanding freshman, sophomore, junior and senior band members. This year the award is worth $450 each."

The student conductors include Jessica Townsend of Konawa, "Newcastle March;" Andrew Orr of Oklahoma City, "Overture for Winds;" Elizabeth Negrete of Madill, "With Quiet Courage;" Brandon Preston of Dixon, the first movement of "Three Ayres from Gloucester;" Kyle Littlejohn of Wilburton, "Peregrin, A Traveler's Tale;" Joel Foster of Sand Springs, "Air for Band;" and Lindsey Sargent of Edmond, "American Riversongs."

The select Wind Ensemble will perform the "George Washington Bicentennial March" by John Philip Sousa, "October" by contemporary composer Eric Whitacre and "Festive Overture, Opus 96," by Dimitri Shostakovich, considered a masterpiece in band literature.
