A march first performed at East Central University on Feb. 23, 1940, with famous composer Percy Grainger at the piano, will be part of ECU's Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band concert Tuesday [FEB. 26] under the direction of Allen Correll. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Dorothy Summers Theatre and admission is free.
Grainger's Children's March: "Over the hills and far away" first was performed at ECU in 1940 by a combined band of outstanding high school musicians along with the college band. It generally is accepted as the first band composition using the piano. In Tuesday's concert, the Wind Ensemble will perform the march with ECU's Dr. Starla Hibler and Dr. Stuart Deaver as soloists.
Also on the Wind Ensemble's program is another Grainger piece, "Brigg Fair," as well as "Moorside March" by Gustav Hols; the first movement of "Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble" by David J. Long, with Dr. Benjamin Finley as marimba soloist; and the third movement, "Apollo Unleashed," from "Symphony No. 2" by Frank Ticheli.
The Symphonic Band will open the concert with "In the Forest of the King" by Pierre La Plante and "Lassus Trombone" by Henry Fillmore.
