ADA – China is a major player in the global business community and that will be the topic of discussion as Dr. Shine Chiang will deliver East Central University’s 2014-2015 Boswell Lecture at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10 in the ECU Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.
The lecture entitled “Spotlight on Business in China” is free and open to the public.
Several Boswell Lecture activities are planned, other than the lecture. A panel presentation is set for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the ECU Foundation Hall.
Topics addressed at the panel presentation will include China’s natural environment, international relations, economic environment and culture and education system. Other topics will include being a traveler/short term visitor in China and the state of doing business in China. This event is free and open to the public.
“Given China’s place in the world today and in the future, we thought a series of events to help area residents better understand China would be a great contribution to the local area,” said Dr. Pat Fountain, Boswell Professor of Business Administration at ECU. “Our hope is that people will find these events both educational and entertaining.”
Chiang is an associate professor of marketing and supply chain management at the Overseas Chinese University in Taipei, Taiwan.
“Her lecture will be an outsider’s views and perceptions of doing business in China and will examine a number of areas influencing business in China,” Fountain said. “She will address topics such as the business environment of today and the future as well as business education in China. Her talk will be based on her experiences in China more than on her research on and in China.”
Chiang is a native and resident of Taiwan. She has studied, taught, lectured, lived, traveled and consulted for a number of businesses in the People’s Republic of China. She holds a
doctorate in management from Peking University in Beijing and a master of business administration and bachelor of general business from Oklahoma City University. Chiang did graduate work at Oklahoma State University and also studied at San Jose State University and Ming Chuan College in Taipie, Taiwan.
She has taught at four universities in China, four in Taiwan and one each in the United States, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic. Chiang has done consulting work for a number of diverse industries and business in China and Tawain. The list includes industries such as funerals, toys, pharmaceutical, eggs, chemicals, tourism, rice and areas such as digital marketing strategy, business model innovation, consumer behavior, credit ratings, employee training and social responsibility.
Chiang is the author of one book and numerous journal and conference proceedings. The work of her students has been recognized by the Economic Ministry of Taiwan.
S.C. Boswell was a respected Ada businessman who served on the Board of Regents for Oklahoma colleges for 18 years. He donated funds for the construction of ECU’s Boswell Chapel in memory of his wife Kathryn. He helped organize the Ada Industrial Development Corporation and establish Valley View Regional Hospital in 1935 in Ada. Boswell was president of the hospital’s board of directors for 12 years.
The Boswell Trust was established through the ECU Foundation Inc. in 1975 by Boswell’s daughters, Sara Boswell and Jane Boswell Maher, in order to help attract and hold outstanding faculty members in business.
Fountain was awarded ECU’s S.C. Boswell Professorship based on effective classroom teaching, professional development, involvement in student activities and contributions to the department, school and university. The Boswell Endowed Professor receives a stipend based on income from the S.C. Boswell Memorial Charitable Trust and organizes a free public lecture or forum on topics of interest related to business.
