Physical Plant Departments
The Physical Plant Department is responsible for all day to day maintenance and repair across the University’s 140 acres and 43 buildings.
Physical Plant consists of the following: Carpentry, Grounds, Custodial, Roofing & Waterproofing, Painting & Resurfacing, Plumbing, Electrical, Heat & Air, and Maintenance Services.
Custodial department is responsible for cleaning 885,540 square feet of building space. Their normal work hours are 3:00 p.m. to midnight.
The Maintenance Department normal operating hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Hazardous Emergencies
In the event of a fire call 911, If the Fire Alarm sounds evacuate the building immediately then notify the Fire Department.
In the event of Gas smell leave the building immediately. Do not operate lights or any other devices that may create a spark. After exiting call ECU police 332-3875.
Emergency Request Procedures
Emergency requests from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday may be reported by calling 559-5377.
After normal work hours emergency repairs for academic buildings are reported to the East Central University Police Department by calling 332-3875.
Housing Emergency request are reported to the RA, Dorm Director or Apartment Manager at the phone numbers listed below.

The RAOC will call ECU police. The appropriate service department will be paged by the ECU Police Department. Maintenance Requests response time may vary due to work load.
Emergency requests (Priority 1)
Response Time - 2 hours to render safe and prevent further damage. Work will be completed as soon as possible thereafter.
Genuine safety issues - Fire alarm malfunction, Heat and Air conditioning in extreme hot or cold weather conditions. Elevator malfunction, Trapped in the elevator or not able to access another floor level,
Security/Safety - Broken Lock, Broken window or glass door,
Hygiene - Sewer Odor, stool won’t flush or clogged.
Essential services needed for proper operation of campus functions - Building Main power outage, Academic building Heat or air conditioning outage. Food service equipment. Refrigerators in Family housing and Knight Hall.
Damage State Property - Flooding, Vandalism, Storm Damage.
Urgent Requests (priority 2) Response
Time 2 working days.
Equipment breakdowns not causing safety issues, flickering lights, running water taps, emergency and security lighting, clocks, Dorm room telephone repair, No power to dorm room electrical outlet.
Non-emergency Request
Non emergency requests can be submitted during normal operating hours by calling 559-5377 or email to: ecumaintenance@ecok.edu. Please be sure to include your name, phone number, building, room/office number, and a description of the problem. Work orders will be completed in the following order:
Non-Emergency Request (Priority 3)
Response time depends on the work load with urgent and emergency request. Majority of minor maintenance requests are subject to availability of parts and access to work area during semester.
Non-critical maintenance, repairs and alterations (Priority 4)
Performed as time permits. Painting, Carpet, Equipment replacement, Ceiling tile replacement.
Grounds
The Grounds Department is responsible for the maintenance of the campus grounds, including: mowing 140 acres, seeding, fertilizing, watering lawns, and maintaining trees, shrubbery, and 350 flowerbeds. In addition, this department is responsible for waste disposal and the maintenance of campus sidewalks during snow removal.
General Repairs and Alterations
The Repairs and Alterations department is responsible for maintenance of all scheduled painting of interior and exterior walls and ceilings, campus signage, windows and renovations.
Plumbing
The Plumbing Department is operated by State Licensed Plumbing Contractors. They are responsible for maintenance on all plumbing fixtures, sanitary drains, storm drains, gas lines, gas fired equipment in food services (pilot lights), and domestic water systems throughout campus.
Electrical
The Electrical Department is operated by State Licensed Electrical Contractors. They are responsible for maintenance of all electrical systems on campus. This department is responsible for repair/replacement of inoperative light fixtures or electrical wiring, for the maintenance of the exterior campus lighting, replacement of HID and mercury vapor lamps, for the maintenance of the campus clock system and campus fire alarm systems.
Heat and Air conditioning
The HVAC department is operated by State Licensed Mechanical Contractors. Responsibilities include scheduling of heating & air conditioning systems, preventive maintenance, repairs and alterations, installation of equipment and daily operational checks are all performed by this department.
Prohibited
No flammables or explosives allowed in the buildings. Open space heaters are prohibited.
