WELCOME

July 1 marked my first anniversary as president of East Central University. This year has been a wonder beyond my wildest imagination.

I love working with students. Your spirit and enthusiasm are contagious. I want you and our faculty and staff to always remember the reason East Central University exists: To Educate Students.

The last year simply flew as I was privileged to get acquainted with students, faculty and staff as well as the citizens of Ada and many alumni in Oklahoma and Texas.

My wife Kay and I are very happy to be in Ada. People here are great.

I have come to believe that educators have the greatest of all professions. They get to share their knowledge with a new group of young people every year and watch as the light bulbs go on in their minds. I am convinced that our educators are more approachable and caring than those at almost any other college and university.

You can expect to have the latest technology and highly educated faculty members, even full professors in your very first year. Our classes are small enough for professors to know your name. They often go out of their way to help you achieve your academic goals.

I want you to know that I'm here for you as well. As a graduate of ECU, I've lived in a residence hall and eaten in the cafeteria. I've had campus jobs and I used to study in the original Linscheid Library.

You probably will know students from your own hometowns. But you also will have the opportunity to make new friends from other states and countries and explore new interests and talents through student organizations and a variety of challenging courses and activities.

ECU also has the prettiest campus in Oklahoma. Last year we opened two facilities to rave reviews -- the Pat O'Neal Strength and Conditioning Center, one of the best in NCAA Division II, and the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center with its two theatres, high definition television studio, art studios and gallery, and vocal and instrumental rehearsal halls.

We have nationally recognized academic programs and highly successful graduates.

One of those graduates, Gen. James D. Thurman, was promoted to four-star general in June and took over huge responsibilities as commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) at Fort McPherson, Ga. It is the Army's largest command.

East Central University is a great place to get ready for your future. Let's get started on yours.
