ADA, Okla. - The public is invited to gather at the bank of the Blue River for an afternoon featuring Chickasaw stories and flute, barbeque, ecology information and creative writing time.
The event will start at 5 p.m. near the public hunting and fishing area of the Blue River.
Oka Camp is an outdoor encounter for people of all ages to build appreciation for the natural world. The Blue River is a critical resource and one of only two wild rivers in Oklahoma. It is sponsored by the Oka’ Institute at ECU, Grow Ada, the Chickasaw Nation Office of Cultural Tourism and the Water Resource Policy and Management master of science degree at ECU.
Attendees are welcome to come and go, the agenda includes:
- 5:00 p.m. Chickasaw Flute by John Stevenson and Lorie Carmichael, Chickasaw Storyteller / BBQ provided by Oka Institute.
- 6:00 p.m. History and Ecology – Cole Fagin and Katie Buckler of the Oka Institute.
- 7:00 p.m. Water Walk Kim Elkin of the Watershed Movement.
- 8:00 p.m. Creative writing and Open Mic reading.
A hunting or fishing license is required to be present in this area, but Oka Camp has special permission to be present as long as attendees stay with the group. Families with children are welcome. Please bring river shoes or boots if you plan to enter the water.
