MAJOR IN NURSING AT ECU

The ECU School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing degree to pre-licensure students. Pre-licensure students complete an eight-semester program leading to the degree. Graduates who meet the Oklahoma state requirements for licensure, including a clear criminal background check, are eligible to apply to sit for the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-CAT, RN) to become a Registered Nurse.

Nursing Mission
The mission of the ECU School of Nursing is to prepare baccalaureate nurses that are lifelong learners, to provide safe, quality, patient-centered care in an environment of teamwork and collaboration. Evidence-based practice and informatics will be used to provide the best possible outcomes for the client and healthcare team in a rapidly changing and culturally diverse society.

Clinical Experiences
ECU Nursing students have clinical learning experiences in modern, up-to-date hospitals and other clinical facilities throughout Oklahoma and North Texas. Both rural and urban sites are used for clinical rotations. Students receive clinical experience in medical/surgical areas, pediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatric mental health nursing, critical care, community health, and nursing leadership. Senior Nursing students participate in a one-to-one experience with a qualified preceptor for a portion of their last semester. 

Graduation Requirements
The Oklahoma Board of Regents requirements for graduation from any state-supported 4-year college or university include:

  1. minimum total of 120 credit hours
  2. minimum of 30 credit hours from ECU (residency requirement)
  3. minimum of 60 credit hours from an accredited four-year senior institution
  4. minimum of 40 upper-division credit hours (3000 and/or 4000 level courses) in any subject matter
  5. minimum of 15 of the last 30 credit hours from ECU or have at least 50 percent of the credit hours required by the institution in the Nursing major completed from ECU

CURRENT APPLICATION TO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING LPN PATHWAY APPLICATION

Applications to the ECU School of Nursing are accepted bi-annually for admission to the Fall and Spring semesters.  Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the School of Nursing to meet with an assigned Nursing advisor to discuss all application and eligibility requirements.  Typically, there are one to two semesters of college-level coursework that need to be completed in order for a student to be eligible for admission.  The School of Nursing can be reached at 580-559-5434 or 559-5933, or via email at nurse_sec@ecok.edu.

Application Cycles:

  • Fall Semester Entry- Cycle opens Oct. 1st - closes March 1st
  • Spring Semester Entry- Cycle opens April 1st - closes Sept. 1st

The ECU School of Nursing uses a scoring rubric to calculate and determine admission points. This process is done upon receipt of all required application documents. Included in, but not limited to, points consideration are retention and program GPAs, pre-entrance exam scores, math and science grades, and previous degrees. Based on these points, applicants are ranked in numerical order and top candidates are selected for admission. Applicants are typically notified within the month following the closing of the application cycle via email. 
 

Transferring Non-Nursing Courses from Another University
Students may check to see if courses they have taken will equate to ECU courses by using the ECU transfer matrix on the ECU website.

  1. The first page lists all the colleges that have equated courses with ECU. Scroll through and find the desired college. Highlight it and click “Next.” The second page lists all courses from that college. Scroll through and find the desired course. Highlight it and click “Next”.
  2. The third page shows if the course is equated to an ECU course, and if so, which ECU course. Because the ECU transfer matrix does not list the course name, there may be a need to search the catalog. If the ECU transfer matrix does not show a course number, or it shows 0000, then that particular course has never been equated to an ECU course. Meet with your advisor to follow up on the possible need for a “Course Substitution Form.”

Transferring Nursing Courses from Another University
Students who have taken nursing courses at another university may be able to transfer them to ECU. Nursing transfer courses are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students should review the Nursing Course Equating Policy below and meet with an advisor for any specific questions.
