Job Title:  Academic Success Center Advisor – Remediation

This position is funded by the Promoting Early Education and Retention through Supplemental/Targeted Advising and Remedial Teaching (PEER-START) SIP (Strengthening Institutional Programs) grant, a five-year grant that provides enhanced academic support to students. This position is located in the Academic Success Center (ASC) and is primarily responsible for assisting students who are remediating deficiencies through remedial coursework and overseeing department work to improve the first-year experience for incoming students.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

• Provides proactive, intrusive advising for students in remedial courses and builds strong professional relationships with faculty teaching remedial courses.

 

• Works with student tutors to plan 3 to 4 “pop up” tutoring sessions each semester.

 

• Uses institutional data and retention-theory research to help students determine course plans and improve student retention.

 

• Maintains reports of outreach with students and tracks student progress.

 

• Collaborates with ASC staff and other campus departments as needed to support the work of the PEER-START grant.

 

• Helps develop and lead faculty advisor training sessions.

 

• Occasional evening or weekend work required (such as for Tiger Enrollment Days).

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Ability to collect, process, interpret outcomes, and perform statistical analysis on large datasets. Proficient in the use of MS Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to create a data-driven methodology to assist in making informed and effective decisions to improve the retention and graduation rates of the identified target population. Ability to relate to underserved students pursuing post-secondary degrees. Skills and knowledge of providing academic services to students. Understanding of needs of underserved students, equity gaps, and intervention/outcome measures. Ability to develop, implement and evaluate new programs. Ability to articulate needs of students and advocate for them before administrators, faculty, and staff. Ability to articulate the academic needs of the students and how to access available resources. Ability to partner with others to accomplish project goals.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Marketing, Human Resources, or related field required.

SALARY: $39,000 plus benefits (OTRS employer and employee portions paid for by ECU; $698/monthly defined benefit applied to health insurance)
