Summary:

The International Students and Programs Coordinator will advise international students from application, enrollment through graduation and post-graduation activities (Optimal Practical Training and the OPT-STEM extensions).

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides international students information on admissions to prospective students, newly admitted students, re-admitted students, their parents and families, school personnel, and the general public. Communication may be by phone, email or walk-ins.

• Provides advice regarding admissions policies and procedures including application due dates, and admissions criteria, the status of applications, admission decisions, required documentation, and other essential admissions information.

• Inform students denied admission to ECU.

• Answer current students’ questions as to enrollment, on-campus employment, change of major, reduction of course load, program extensions, college transfers, graduation, visas, and other international students’ services.

• Assist former students with questions on Optimal Practical Training eligibility, applications, reporting, and deadlines.

• Must be willing and able to comprehend and relay information on application, admission, international student services, graduation and post-graduation activities.

• Assist with office events, such as orientations and workshops.

• Assist in the supervision of student employees.

• Experience with working with SEVIS.

• Maintains and organizes files for the office.

• Maintains office supplies.

• Communicate with other offices on-campus.

• Answer phone calls, emails and walk-ins.

• Other duties as assigned by Director of International Students and Programs or designated ECU representative.

 

Qualifications:

• Demonstrate working knowledge of office practices and methods.

• Coordinate work with other employees.

• Organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgement based on university policy and procedures.

• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with all stakeholders—faculty, administrators, staff, students, and the community.

• Provide competent customer-service.

• Maintain confidentiality regarding protected information.

• Manage deadlines on multiple projects.

• Effectively use office equipment and software including, but not limited to, the Microsoft Office 365 Suite.

• Computer proficiency, including the use of databases.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate well to and work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds; demonstrated understanding of issues affecting international students.

• Demonstrated experience in budgeting and planning.

 

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or three years’ experience related to international student advising/counseling in a higher education environment.

• Preferred: Background in customer service, law enforcement, and/or military service.

• Required: 1+ years’ experience in an administrative assistant position. Writing skills, verbal communication skills, and computer skills must be above entry-level.

• Willingness to learn and professionally develop.

• Patience to explain detailed information to individuals of foreign cultures.

• Ability to remain calm while interacting with individuals upset and/or impatient.

• Assertive in interactions with others and an ability to stand up for one’s self.
