Job Title:  Upward Bound Project Coordinator

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

 

The Upward Bound Program is a federally-funded educational program that provides academic and counseling services to low-income and first-generation high school students in preparation for college. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

To identify, recruit, and provide services to a selected number of Upward Bound students within a six county area. The services provided include counseling in social, personal, and academic areas. These services are directed to promote the successful postsecondary placement for former Upward Bound students who have completed high school.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

* Familiarize target school’s faculty and administrators to the project goals.

 

* Establish a working relationship with service agencies of the target area.

 

* Identify and select eligible participants for the project’s services.

 

* Counsel participants concerning educational goals.

 

* Provide career and institutional information that will best meet individual needs.

 

* Encourage completion of secondary school through motivational techniques.

 

* Provide institutional visits and career days.

 

* Aid participants in gaining admission to postsecondary institutions.

 

* Disseminate financial information and assist participant in securing adequate financial aid.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

* High degree of professionalism and adherence to professional ethics.

 

* Teaching experience is preferred but not mandatory.

 

* Knowledge of academic resources, educational and financial aid strategies.

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 

Bachelor’s Degree or pursuant of Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Education, Human Resources, or related field.

 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

 

* Ability to relate to school participants, teacher, counselors, and administrators in a positive manner.

 

* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

* Prior TRIO experience is preferred.
