"Te Ata" Screening for ECU Students & Employees

Event Date
4:00 pm

Ataloa Theatre, Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center

East Central University will be hosting a private screening for ECU students and employees to watch the Chickasaw Nation’s movie Te Ata. Many Oklahomans had the opportunity to participate in the movie as it was filmed locally. There are familiar faces and locations in the film. The Chickasaw Nation is privileging us with the opportunity to show this major motion picture to our employees and students. As with other ECU events, family members may also attend with a valid ECU ID.

Te Ata is based on the true story of Mary Thompson Fisher, a woman who traversed cultural barriers to become one of the greatest Native American performers of all time. Mary took the stage name Te Ata, which means “Bearer of Morning” in the Chickasaw language. As a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, Te Ata was an accomplished actor and teller of Native American stories and overcame various obstacles to perform in front of President Roosevelt, the King and Queen of Great Britain and stages across the United States. A movie trailer is available at http://www.teatamovie.com.

This film will be screened in Ataloa Theatre. Ataloa was another renowned Chickasaw artist. She and Te Ata were not only cousins, they attended USAO and remained great friends for many years thereafter.
