Chalmers Herman Theatre, Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center
ECU Theatre brings Bernard Pomerance's prize-winning play "The Elephant Man" to the Chalmers Herman Theatre. The play chronicles the last years of Joseph Merrick, the actual elephant man who suffered from what is now thought to be an extreme case of neurofibromatosis and/or Proteus syndrome. The play premiered in 1979, winning 3 Tony awards including Best Play, Best Leading Actress, and Best Director. It has been revived twice with with Billy Crudup in the lead role in 2002 and Bradley Cooper in 2014. Singer David Bowie toured Denver, Chicago, and Broadway with a production in 1980 and Mark Hamill of STAR WARS fame made his Broadway debut in the play in 1981. The film version with John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins was not based on this innovative theatrical play. The play will be directed by Dr. Richard Groetzinger with senior music theatre concentration major Philip Robert Newcomer in the role of Joseph, now thought to be either an extremely severe case of neurofibromatosis.
