ECU SCREENS continues its season with the fastest-selling production in British theatre history: “Hamlet,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of East Central University’s Bill S. Cole University Center.

Open to the public, the screening is $5 for students and $10 for members of the community.

ECU SCREENS is collaborating with Sigma Tau Delta and ECU’s Honors Student Association to show the NT Live production of “Hamlet,” performed at the Barbican Theatre in London. The original 2015 broadcast was experienced by a record-breaking half a million people worldwide.

As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.

Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica), this “Hamlet” is “[o]ne of the most visually and atmospherically stunning productions . . . ever” according to Time Out.

Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Frankenstein at the National Theatre) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. Critics praised Cumberbatch’s performance as Hamlet saying he “exudes charisma and intelligence” (Evening Standard) and is “a blazing five-star Hamlet” (Daily Telegraph).

“Hamlet” is the third of six recorded-live NT Live productions that will be presented by ECU SCREENS this fall. NT Live is the National Theatre's groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre to cinemas around the world.
