East Central University adjunct instructor and flutist Juliana Overmier, accompanied on the piano by ECU’s Dr. Starla Hibler, will perform on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center, located at 14th and Rennie in Ada.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The pair will perform works by John Carmichael, Giuseppe Verdi, Jacques Casterede, Franz Doppler, and Jacques Ibert.
Overmier was a prize winner in both the 2009 Chicago Flute Club’s Solo Artist Competition and the 2009 National Flute Association’s Convention Performers Competition in New York.
An active performer and competitor, Overmier has also won first prize in several other competitions, including the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition in Boston, the Concours Artistique Lucien Wurmser in Paris, and the Byron Hester Solo Flute Competition in Houston in 2007.
“I’m especially excited to play this concert, because we’ve programmed several pieces that are either new or relatively unknown in the flute repertoire, as well as a couple of audience favorites,” said Overmier. “After 37 years of flute playing, I enjoy performing new or newly-discovered music, especially when it is of such high quality. There should be something for everyone at this concert.”
Overmier is a member of the Tulsa Opera Orchestra and Enid Symphony, and also performs with the Tulsa Symphony. She served as principal flutist for the Light Opera of Oklahoma Orchestra in Tulsa for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Overmier has performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, former Tulsa Philharmonic, Tulsa Oratorio Chorus and Tulsa Ballet Orchestra.
In 2004, she joined the faculty at ECU, where she teaches flute and directs the ECU Flute Ensemble. In addition to her freelance playing and large private teaching studio, Overmier is a member of the Cimarron Wind Quintet, serves on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Flute Society and is a frequent and adjudicator for musical organizations statewide.
After earning her bachelor’s degree at DePauw University in Indiana, Overmier moved to Boston to study privately. She then traveled to Nice, France where she earned a diploma at the Nice Conservatory’s summer program. She then moved to Paris to study at the Conservatory of Bourg-La-Reine/Sceuaux, from which she received a gold medal, the highest diploma awarded.
In 1996, Overmier earned her master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Southern California, where she won the Annual Concerto Competition. While living in Los Angeles, she performed on several film soundtracks, including As Good As It Gets and Halloween H20.
Hibler is a Professor of Music at ECU, where she has taught since 1991. She holds DMA and MM degrees in Piano Performance from the University of North Texas where she studied with Joseph Banowetz. Hibler received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Illinois Wesleyan University and has studied at the Vienna Conservatory in Vienna, Austria.

She was awarded the 2009 Teacher of the Year Award by the Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs.
In 2001, Hibler received the honor of being deemed “Outstanding Adan in the Arts” by the Ada Arts Council.
