ADA, Okla. – Following an extensive search, Dr. Mark Walling has been named the new Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) at East Central University. With 38 years of dedicated service to ECU, Walling brings a wealth of experience in education and a long-standing commitment to both ECU students and alumni to his new position.
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Walling,” said Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Jeffrey Gibson. “Yes, he has the experience, work ethic, and temperament to succeed as a dean. But, most importantly, he has a passion for and a commitment to the students, programs, and faculty of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.”
Walling’s history with ECU first began as a student. It was at ECU that he received his B.A. in English with Teacher Certification in 1985. He then went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Oklahoma State University.
After completing his M.A. and while pursuing his Ph.D., Walling returned to ECU in 1987 as a member of the faculty, steadily advancing through the ranks to become a tenured professor and a respected, irreplaceable member of the Tiger community.
Throughout his career, Walling taught a variety of courses in the English and Languages Department, with a specialized focus on Creative Writing. In 1995, he assumed the role of faculty advisor for ECU’s literary journal, “Originals,” where he had the opportunity to work closely with countless students over the years, guiding them through the editing and publication process.
Walling also served as the Chair of the Department of English and Languages and was appointed Interim Dean of CLASS during the summer of 2024.
“I have been at ECU for almost 40 years,” said Walling when asked about his new role, “and I am delighted and honored to serve this great institution as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.”
Walling officially assumes his position March 1, 2025.
