ADA – East Central University is offering a Reading Program for children, entering the first through sixth grades, including those repeating kindergarten, for the 2014-15 school year.

“Only 40 students will be accepted for this program,” said Dr. Regina Smith ECU’s early childhood education program director and interim director of the graduate reading program. “We will focus on an intensive reading program and work with students in small groups. The tutors will create a positive learning environment which helps students succeed.”

Dr. Smith and David L. Smith will oversee the program. Both are certified literacy specialists and assistant professors in ECU’s Education Department.

The tutors are teachers-in-training who will earn their teaching credentials within a year and will be supervised by certified teachers.

The six tutoring sessions, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., begin on Friday, June 13, and will be held each Friday in June and July (except July 4), before wrapping up on July 25.

The cost is $105 per child, less than $9 an hour for high-quality instruction designed and targeted for a child’s specific needs.

A limited number of scholarships may be available.
