ADA, Okla. - The 36th annual Sovereignty Symposium was held in Oklahoma City on June 11-12, 2024. ECU Legal Studies, Political Science, Water Resource Policy and Management Masters of Science degree, and the Oka Institute were represented by students and faculty.

For the first time, undergraduate students were invited to present posters. Of the six slots allotted, four were won by ECU students.

Recent ECU Legal Studies graduate Sarah Osborn of Seminole won the Blue Clark Memorial Poster Competition. Her project is entitled “The Importance of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 and Morton v. Mancari on Indian Children, Families, and Communities.” She was awarded a cash prize of $250.

Presentations were also made by ECU senior Catherine McGee, Legal Studies major from Edmond; senior Stuart Osborn, Legal Studies and studio art major from Seminole; and senior Garrett Trett, Political Science major from Sulphur.

The Oka Institute made presentations on water and economic development in Oklahoma which was chaired by Duane Smith, Director of the Oka Institute.

The Sovereignty Symposium is a Continuing Legal Education opportunity for lawyers in Oklahoma and provides a forum for the exchange ideas among sovereign stakeholders.
