Eleven East Central University students or recent graduates have been accepted into medical and professional schools. Ten are from ECU’s Biology Department and one is a graduate of the Physics Program. Ten additional students have been selected to participate in prestigious summer internship programs.

The students were recognized by Dr. Nicholas Cheper, chair of ECU’s Biology Department, at the College of Health and Sciences Awards Ceremony.

Two students have been accepted by Oklahoma State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Kayla White of Ada, who was accepted after completing her junior year at ECU, and recent graduate Kristen Thompson of Elmore City, a physics major.

Roselynn Simpson of Wetumka, the recipient of the George Nigh Award as ECU’s top graduating senior, has been accepted by the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.

Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine has accepted Derek Bolt of Healdton, who graduated from ECU last December, and spring graduates Dylon Howard and George Russell, both of Ada.

Alison Stowers (Lee) of Ada began her studies last January in Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s College of Pharmacy.

Two spring 2010 graduates also were admitted to schools of dentistry, Mark Gaches of Schulter to the University of Southern California, and Jordan Antonisse of Richardson, Texas, to Baylor University. Taylor Markwardt of Ardmore was accepted into the University of Oklahoma Dental Hygiene Program.

Britney Hillwig of Haworth was accepted into the physical therapy program at the University of Central Arkansas.

Blake Scott of Newcastle is the first biology student from ECU accepted for a summer internship at Johns Hopkins University.

Carina Clemente of Fort Worth, Texas, received an internship to the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates in Texas A&M’s Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology. Justin Gates of Ada received a NASA Internship at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Four students received Oklahoma INBRE (the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) summer research internships for undergraduates. They are Skylar Farrill of Stratford, Stacey Halsey of Ada and Ankita (Angie) Thapa of Ada who will conduct research at ECU, and Hilary Sanchez of Wetumka, who will work at the OU Health Sciences Center.

Three students have been awarded National Science Foundation EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) summer internships. They are Brent Biddy of Seminole, Jeff Lacroix of Slidell, La., and Nick Rackley of Muskogee.

“We still have lots of students with applications out who may get into the school of their choice or on an alternate list,” said Dr. Rahmona Thompson, ECU professor of biology. “However, more and more are not applying until after they graduate.”
