The East Central University Foundation Inc. conducted "An Evening of Honors and Recognition" on May 6. Here are those who were recognized and the centennial endowments:
 

Bridges-Burke EndowmentBRIDGES-BURKE ENDOWMENT RECOGNIZED

Hargrave (far right) during “An Evening of Honors and Recognition” this past spring. The Bridges-Burke Social Work Endowment was recognized for reaching centennial status. Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student in the social work program who has maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average.



Craig Scheef Service AwardSCHEEF HONORED WITH DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Craig Scheef (center) received the 2016 Distinguished Service Award during “An Evening of Honors and Recognition”, hosted by East Central University this past spring. Also pictured are ECU President John R. Hargrave (left) and Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation Inc., Executive Board. Scheef is founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Texas Security Bank, rated No. 5 among the healthiest banks in America in 2015 by DepositAccounts.com, after serving as a community bank president for the Bank of Texas – a subsidiary of BOK Financial. Scheef played football at ECU and was named an Academic All-American his junior and senior seasons. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration-marketing from ECU in 1985. In 2005, he received the Milam Award at ECU for being an ECU football alumnus who excelled in his chosen vocation.
  



Daniel Minnich ScholarshipDANIEL MINNICH MEMORIAL TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP ACHIEVES CENTENNIAL STATUS

The Daniel Minnich Centennial Memorial Student Teaching Endowment achieved centennial status, it was announced at “An Evening of Honors and Recognition” at East Central University this past spring.  Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student in the social work program who has maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. Pictured left to right are: ECU President John R. Hargrave; Andrew Minnich, brother of Daniel; Rick Minnich, Daniel’s father; Jo Ann Minnich, Daniel’s mother; Michelle Minnich, Daniel’s sister and Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation, Inc., Executive Board. The scholarship is awarded to an education student during his/her semester of student teaching. Daniel was an ECU student who passed away during his student teaching semester. The scholarship has been established by his family and friends in his memory.
  



Essie Roark Business ScholarshipESSIE ROARK ENDOWMENT REACHES CENTENNIAL STATUS

Godwin was accepting the Essie Roark Stonecipher School of Business Centennial Endowment Award in recognition of the endowment reaching centennial status. Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. This scholarship is awarded to students who serve in the Stonecipher School of Business student organization as an officer in the Business Leaders Association (BLA).

Sherbourne was accepting the awards for the DCT College of Education and Psychology Endowment and the Essie Roark College of Education and Psychology Centennial Endowment in recognition of the endowment reaching centennial status. Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. The DCT and Roark scholarships are awarded to graduate students, who have been unconditionally admitted to their program of education, psychology or kinesiology.

Carol Bridges - distinguished former facultyDR. BRIDGES NAMED DISTINGUISHED FORMER FACULTY

Dr. Carol Bridges (center) received the 2016 Distinguished Former Faculty Award during “An Evening of Honors and Recognition”, hosted by East Central University this past spring. Also pictured are ECU President John R. Hargrave (left) and Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation Inc., Executive Board. Bridges served as a professor of social work for 35 years, including 16 years as director of the Social Work program and led in reaffirmation of the national accreditation of the program in 2002 and 2010 before retiring in 2013 and gaining the title of professor emeritus.

Dr. Jim Scales - distinguished alumDR. SCALES HONORED
AS DISTINGUISHED ALUM

Dr. Jimmy Scales (second from left) was presented with East Central University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award by ECU President John R. Hargrave at “An Evening of Honors and Recognition” this past spring. Pictured next to Davis are: Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation, Inc., Executive Board; Barbara Miller, president of the ECU Alumni Association Executive Board and Katie Wellington, director of ECU alumni relations. Scales is a nationally-recognized educator, civic and social leader and former superintendent of schools. He served as a teacher, coach and principal at Millwood High School in Oklahoma City and McLain High School in Tulsa before becoming superintendent of the College Station (Texas) Independent School District and later became deputy superintendent for the Dallas Independent School District. Scales most recently served as superintendent of Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga, Tenn., from 2006-2011, before his retirement. Scales received his bachelor of science degree in history and physical education from ECU in 1966, master of education from ECU in 1969 and a doctorate of philosophy in education and research from the University of Tulsa in 1991.



Dr. Terry Cluck - Tri Beta ScholarshipTRI-BETA BIOLOGY ENDOWMENT RECEIVES CENTENNIAL STATUS

Cluck was accepting the Dr. Terry Cluck Centennial Tri-Beta Biology Endowment Award in recognition of the endowment reaching centennial status. Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in biology who has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The recipient must also be an active member or officer of Tri-Beta.



Dr. Tim Green - distinguished former facultyDR. TIM GREEN DISTINGUISHED FORMER FACULTY

Paula Green (center) received the 2016 Distinguished Former Faculty Award for her late husband Dr. Tim Green during “An Evening of Honors and Recognition”, hosted by East Central University this past spring. Also pictured are ECU President John R. Hargrave (left) and Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation Inc., Executive Board. Green taught undergraduate and graduate courses in reading methods, served on many committees and served as athletic director 25 years until his retirement in 2006.



Frank Davis - distinguished alumDAVIS HONORED AS DISTINGUISHED ALUM

Frank W. Davis (second from left) was presented with East Central University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award by ECU President John R. Hargrave at “An Evening of Honors and Recognition” this past spring. Pictured next to Davis are: Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation, Inc., Executive Board; Barbara Miller, president of the ECU Alumni Association Executive Board and Katie Wellington, director of ECU alumni relations. Davis served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives for District 31, where he served for 26 years. During his tenure he authored over 100 pieces of legislation which became law. He also served as an assistant minority floor leader and floor leader from 1982-86. After graduating from ECU with a bachelor of arts degree in history and government in 1958, Davis attended law school at the University of Illinois and the University of Oklahoma where he obtained a bachelor of laws degree. He served as postmaster in Ada and was later appointed county attorney in Guthrie and opened a law practice there. He served as part-time Guthrie municipal judge. Davis also became a Republican County chairman for Pontotoc and Logan Counties and was twice an Oklahoma delegate to the National Republican Conventions in 1984 and 1996.



Grinnell FamilyGRINNELL FAMILY HONORED WITH DISTINGUISHED AWARD

The Grinnell family was recognized with the 2016 Distinguished Family Award at East Central University’s Evening of Honors and Recognition this past spring. Earl and JoAnn Grinnell moved to Shawnee in 1968, where their five children – Rebecca, Randy, Richie, Roxann and Ron – graduated from Shawnee High School. Four of the five children attended and graduated from ECU and the second generation of the Grinnell family – Zac, Riley and Josh – graduated from ECU in 2006 and 2007. In all, nine have graduated from ECU. Pictured left to right on the front row are: Randy Grinnell (bachelor of science in environmental science in 1976), Roxann Grinnell, Rebecca Grinnell Loving (bachelor of science in nursing in 1975), Richie K. Grinnell (bachelor of science in environmental science in 1978) and Ron Grinnell (bachelor of science in accounting in 1984). Jim Spencer - distinguished alumSPENCER NAMED DISTINGUISHED ALUM

Jim Spencer (second from left) was presented with East Central University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award at “An Evening of Honors and Recognition” this past spring. Pictured next to Davis are: Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation, Inc., Executive Board; Barbara Miller, president of the ECU Alumni Association Executive Board and Katie Wellington, director of ECU alumni relations. Spencer is the chief weathercaster at KXAN-TV in Austin, Texas, where he has been forecasting Central Texas weather for more than 25 years. He graduated with honors from ECU in 1985, receiving his bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a radio/TV concentration and was a speech minor. Spencer grew up in Lindsay, in the heart of tornado alley, which he credits his life-long fascination with weather. His broadcasting career began the same month he started college at ECU as he spent two years at KADA-AM radio and moved into television at Ada’s KTEN-TV in 1983. He remained with KTEN before joining KXAN.



Karen Hudson - distinguished serviceHUDSON PRESENTED WITH DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Karen Hudson (center) received the 2016 Distinguished Service Award during “An Evening of Honors and Recognition”, hosted by East Central University this past spring. Also pictured are ECU President John R. Hargrave (left) and Jay Horne, chair of the ECU Foundation Inc., Executive Board. Hudson, who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at ECU, is currently the president and CEO of the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce and formerly served as alumni relations director at ECU, interim vice president for institutional advancement at ECU and director of public relations at People’s Electric Cooperative. She is also the owner of a consulting company she began in 2011, Hudson Advancement Strategies.



Pauline Lanoy - ScholarshipLANOY SCHOLARSHIP REACHES CENTENNIAL STATUS

Pauline Lanoy (second from left) accepts the Leon and Pauline Lanoy Centennial Graduate Education Endowment Award from ECU President John R. The Leon and Pauline Lanoy Centennial Graduation Education Endowment was recognized for reaching centennial status. Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. The scholarship was established assist master’s degree students because of the Lanoys’ strong belief in the value of higher education and the teaching profession.



Ruben and Karla Elizarde ScholarshipELIZARDE ENDOWMENT REACHES CENTENNIAL STATUS

Hargrave during “An Evening of Honors and Recognition” this past spring. The Ruben and Karla Elizarde Centennial Athletic Endowment Centennial Endowment reached centennial status. Centennial endowments are those which have reached the $15,000 level or were newly-established at that level during the past year. This scholarship is awarded to a student of Hispanic heritage who has completed their athletic eligibility, but still needs hours to obtain a bachelor’s degree. This scholarship may also be awarded to a student-athlete working toward a master’s degree.
