ADA, Okla. – East Central University presents “The Insanity of Mary Girard,” Sept. 19-21. The play will be held in the Chalmers Herman Theatre, located in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center (HBFFAC), with a start time of 7:30 p.m.
A one-act play written by Lanie Robertson, “The Insanity of Mary Girard” tells the real-life story of a Philadelphia woman who spent the last 25 years of her life in a mental institution.
In 1790, after becoming pregnant by another man, Mary’s husband had her declared legally insane and committed to an asylum. Now, she sits in her chair as the “furies” dance around and impersonate people from her past.
By the end of this haunting and highly theatrical piece, Mary has grown rather convincingly into her diagnosis.
Jamie Davis, Technical Director and Events Coordinator for HBFFAC, brings a cast of students together for the first ECU production of the school year. The cast includes, Parker Johnson as Mary Girard, Rafael Charqueno as Stephen Girard, Bentley Hill as The Warder/Fury #1, Daphne Draper as Mrs. Lum/Fury #2, Keegan Bellefeuille as Polly Kenton/Fury #3, Brice Fitzgerald as Mr. Phillips/Fury #4, Olivia Hunley as Mrs. Hatcher/Fury #5.
"I am excited about directing this show,” said Davis. “It is a historical play based on actual events and written to highlight injustices faced by many women in late 18th-century America. And though it is not a show for kids as it deals with adult matters, it is an important show that needs to be seen. I am also excited about this group of young actors. All but one are from the incredible High School Drama programs in the Ada area. This is a show you won't want to miss!"
Adult general admission tickets are $10. Kids’ general admission tickets are $5.
ECU students and employees receive free admission with their university ID.
Tickets can be purchased online at ecok.edu/hbffac-box-office, at the door or by calling 580-559-5751
