Congratulating Laura Johnson (center), the first recipient of the Don and Jane Kellogg Mathematics and Science Teaching Scholarship at East Central University, are Don and Jane Kellogg (from left), the scholarship's founders, and Johnson's parents, Melody and Tom Johnson. Johnson is a freshman majoring in mathematics with a concentration in teacher certification.
"I want to be a teacher and this scholarship will help me achieve that goal," said Johnson, the daughter of Tom and Melody Johnson of Holdenville.
The scholarship was established to assist students in pursuing a degree at ECU in either mathematics or science teaching. Dr. Don Kellogg was a professor at ECU from 1965 until 1990. He originally taught physics and helped to build a science teaching program. When he retired in 1990 he was a member of the Education Department.
"My wife and I were both active in teacher education in the areas of math and science," Kellogg said. "We wanted to do something to help entice high quality young people to teach in the areas of math and science."
Kellogg worked with Dr. Don Stafford and Dr. Clyde Butler, both former ECU faculty, and Dr. Bruce Weems, the dean of ECU's College of Health and Sciences, to design the scholarship which is a $1,000 award for the freshman year and $2,000 a year in subsequent years as long as the student maintains a declared major in mathematics and/or science and enrolls in courses leading to secondary teaching certification.
"My wife and I think Laura is an excellent example of the type of student that this scholarship represents," said Kellogg.
