Kyle Foster of Bromide, a senior political science major at East Central University, has received a $250 scholarship from the Fortnightly Club of Ada. He was selected on the basis of academic achievement and leadership skills.
Foster is a 2005 graduate of Wapanucka High School. At ECU he was president of the Student Senate during the 2007-08 year, acting as the students' voice on campus on many committees and speaking at such events as Dr. Richard Rafes' investiture as ECU president and at Higher Education Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
"Kyle Foster has exhibited abundant leadership skills here at ECU," said Dr. Christine Pappas, an associate professor of political science at ECU. "He was especially effective as president of the ECU Student Senate."
Foster also was President of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. He was named Pi Kappa Alpha's most outstanding pledge and in 2008 was named Most Interfraternal Male, a campus-wide award for the most outstanding male Greek student. He has been an officer in the College Republicans, Oklahoma Federation of College Republicans, Honors Student Association and Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society.
He has been listed on the Dean's Honor Roll and the President's Honor Roll, was named a Top Ten Freshman and in 2008 was awarded the President's Excellence in Leadership Award.
Foster also has excelled in the classroom. He has conducted original research and is the co-author of a study called "What Not to Wear: Fashion and Female Candidates," which he and other students presented in 2007 at the Oklahoma Political Science Association's annual meeting at the Capitol.
He is completing an internship with the Pontotoc County District Attorney and has been named the acting executive director of the Oklahoma Political Science Association and the acting managing editor of the journal "Oklahoma Politics" which is published by East Central University.
Foster will graduate in December with a political science major and a mass communication minor. His goal is to attend law school next fall.
The Fortnightly Study Club was founded in 1922. It rotates its annual scholarship between its four departments: Modern Book, Music, Progressive Drama and Twenty-First Century.
