ADA, Okla. – The Oka’ Institute is proud to announce the resounding success of Oka Con'24, which brought together over 130 attendees, including industry leaders, researchers, policy makers, and students, for three days of dynamic discussions, networking, and exploration of water sustainability practices. The conference, now officially renamed the John and Kay Hargrave Water Sustainability Conference, marks a new chapter in its legacy, paying tribute to two individuals whose dedication to advancing water resource management has left an indelible impact on Oklahoma and beyond.
This year's theme, "Uniting in Water", emphasized the collaborative efforts required to ensure sustainable water practices in the face of growing global challenges. Keynote speakers, including Governor Bill Anoatubby of the Chickasaw Nation, underscored the importance of partnerships in addressing water quality and quantity issues in Oklahoma and across the nation.
“The conversations we’ve had over the past three days have been powerful, shedding light on the innovative solutions and collaborative efforts needed to safeguard our water resources,” said Duane Smith, Executive Director of the Oka' Institute. “Renaming this conference in honor of John and Kay Hargrave not only celebrates their lifelong commitment to sustainability and service, but it also underscores the lasting legacy they’ve created within our community.”
John and Kay Hargrave have been instrumental in promoting environmental stewardship and water sustainability throughout their careers, with deep ties to East Central University (ECU) and the Oka’ Institute. Their leadership has helped shape the institute’s mission of advancing practical, science-based solutions for sustainable water management.
“Kay and I are deeply humbled and honored to be recognized by the Oka’ Institute and the Sustainability Conference. It has truly been a team effort, and the contributions of many individuals have led to the successes of the Oka’ Institute. I want to thank all of those currently involved and those who helped get us to this point. It is very exciting to see the pathway forward in the “Uniting for Water,” said John Hargrave, President of ECU Foundation.
The conference featured an array of expert speakers, panels, and interactive sessions focused on topics such as the Blue Economy and technological innovations in water resource management. Attendees also enjoyed immersive field trips to Byrds Mill Springs and other local water sites, showcasing Oklahoma’s natural water resources and the innovative conservation efforts taking place across the region.
