ADA, Okla. – The Oka’ Institute at East Central University is proud to announce that Duane Smith, Executive Director, participated in the Oklahoma Senate Interim Study on Water Usage, Monitoring, and Oversight. The study, initiated by state legislators, aims to address the growing challenges surrounding water resource management, long-term sustainability, and current practices and policies governing water resources across Oklahoma. Smith spoke on the overview of water policy and law in the state, emphasizing the importance of robust frameworks in ensuring sustainable water management.
As a recognized expert in water policy and law, Smith is a leading voice in water resource management, Smith brings decades of experience to this critical discussion. His insights focused on the need for updated policies that addressed the state’s growing water demands, improved monitoring systems, and enhanced oversight mechanisms to protect Oklahoma’s water supply in the face of increasing challenges.
"Water is Oklahoma’s most vital natural resource, and it’s critical that we strike a balance between ensuring water availability and meeting the needs of diverse stakeholders," said Smith. "This study is an important step in strengthening the state's water monitoring systems, oversight policies, and infrastructure improvements to secure water for future generations."
The Energy and Telecommunications Senate Committee reviewed how Oklahoma’s water resources are utilized, including current monitoring efforts to ensure water quality and availability for all sectors. Smith’s presentation included an analysis of the key issues facing Oklahoma’s water policy, including groundwater and surface management, and the impact of water resources.
In addition to Smith, the study featured presentations from water experts across the state, bringing diverse perspectives on how to improve water governance, protect natural resources, and support economic development.
