ADA – Peter L. Markes, 2014 Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year, will be the featured speaker at the annual Marvin Stokes Endowed Lecture on Monday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in East Central University’s Estep Multimedia Room, inside the Bill S. Cole University Center.
Seventeen local district teachers of the year will be recognized as well with a reception at the Oklahoma Regents Room of the ECU Student Union from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Following the reception, Markes will deliver the Stokes Lecture in the Bill S. Cole University Center.
The 17 local district teacher of the year winners include: Natalie Hughes, of Ada; Rick Cherry, Atoka; Kelly Fike, Byng; Patti Palmer, Calvin; Mary Klinger, Coalgate; Mara Richards, Durant; Cathe Jamar, Latta; Sheila Ketchum, McAlester; Byron Church, Moore; Chad Brooking, North Rock Creek; Melinda Alfred, Pauls Valley; Angela VanderSys, Prague; Donna Schneberger, Purcell; Kay Arbuckle, Sasakwa; Susan Rindal, Vanoss; Crystal Ivy, Wanette; and Rhea Ann Williamson, Whitebead.
Markes is the eighth through 12th grade string orchestra and advanced placement music theory teacher at Edmond North High School.
He has 12 years of teaching experience, 11 in his current position.
Markes has a bachelor’s degree of music in education, with an emphasis on instrumental music, from Oklahoma City University.
He will represent Oklahoma in the National Teacher of the Year competition in the spring of 2014. He is serving as Oklahoma’s ‘Ambassador of Teaching’, presenting to teachers and civic groups throughout the state.
