The Rotaract Club at East Central University will host Rotary International District 5770 Water Project chair Brian Henderson at 2 p.m. Wednesday [DEC. 3] in the Regents Room of the Memorial Student Union. ECU students, faculty, staff and the Ada community are invited to attend.

Henderson is a Rotarian from Sayre. He will speak about Rotary's project to provide water filters to villages in areas of Honduras that have no access to clean drinking water.

With no other options, women and children spend hours and walk miles each day to collect and carry unsafe drinking water, according to Henderson. Drinking unclean water leads to painful and deadly bacterial, parasitic and viral infections such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, polio and hepatitis A. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reports that nearly 2 million children die each year from illnesses related to unclean water and poor sanitation.

The ECU Rotaract Club raises funds each year for an international project. This year, club members selected Rotary District 5770's water filtration system. Club members feel clean water is a wonderful way to make a positive difference in the lives of many people, said president Sara Van Eaton.
