Clarissa Willis, Ph.D, an author, consultant and professional development specialist, will present “Teaching Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” on Saturday, May 18, at East Central University’s Estep Multimedia Center inside the Bill S. Cole University Center.

The free presentation is open to the public and will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Today, one in 150 children is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This chronic condition affects how children interact socially, communicate with others, and behave. Children with Autism have difficulty with social interaction, communication, behavior and sensory integration.

Participants in the seminar will learn strategies for planning a school environment that addresses these issues through collaboration with the child’s family, and how to access community resources and build partnerships with other professionals working with children with autism.

Willis has published several award-winning books including: Teaching Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, My Child has Autism, and Teaching Infants Toddlers and Twos with Special Needs (Gryphon House).

She is co-author with Dr. Pam Schiller of Inclusive Literacy Lessons. In addition, she is also the author of Inclusive Environments for Young Children – What to Do on Monday Morning! (Corwin Press). Her articles have appeared in journals such as Young Children, Childcare Information Exchange, Dimensions of Early Childhood and Training Exception Children. In 2012, she was senior author of the new comprehensive curriculum Learn Every Day.
