Seven students from Oklahoma's regional universities have been named Brad Henry International Scholars and will spend the spring 2010 semester participating in an international study and internship program at Swansea University in Wales.
Echo Adcock, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant; Lindsey "Dare" Chronister, East Central University, Ada; Taylor Hildenbrand and Zachary Hurley, University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond; Andrea Jones, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Chickasha; Brian Lunk, Rogers State University, Claremore; and Andrea Morgan, Langston University, Langston, were chosen by their institutions for the international study program, which was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in June 2008.
The State Regents provide a $10,000 stipend for students selected to participate in semester-long study or research programs affiliated with Swansea University. Academic credit for these programs will be awarded by Oklahoma regional universities.
"These students possess the academic talent, dedication to service and leadership that makes them highly qualified for this program," Chancellor Glen D. Johnson said. "They will represent the state and their universities well while they are overseas and we will look forward to these students returning home and sharing what they have learned."
Hildenbrand and Hurley will intern with the National Assembly for Wales.
Hildenbrand is pursuing dual bachelor's degrees in marketing and political science at UCO with the goal of serving in an elected office. He is active in community service, serving as executive director of UCO's Cans for Africa organization and executive council member of the Global Impact Volunteer Effort (GIVE) and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He is also an executive member of UCO's Leaders of Tomorrow council, which promotes leadership development and involvement in service to others. Hildenbrand has received the Broncho Central Standout award for most outstanding freshman and Leo Award for most outstanding new member of the Leaders of Tomorrow council. He has also been on the President's Honor Roll.
Hurley currently studies organizational communication with a minor in leadership at UCO. After graduation, he plans to become a lawyer and pursue a career in public service. Dedicated to community service, he serves as vice president of UCO's Leaders of Tomorrow council and president of UCO's Habitat for Humanity chapter.
Adcock, Chronister, Jones and Morgan will participate in the study-abroad program at Swansea University.
Adcock is a senior double majoring in biology and chemistry at Southeastern. After graduation, Adcock plans to attend the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine to study dermatology. She is active in many extracurricular activities and community organizations, including the American Chemical Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Green Club. Adcock also participated in the Student Government Association and was a member of the University's Presidents' Club.
Chronister is working toward a bachelor's in kinesiology and a minor in education from ECU. After graduation, she plans to pursue a master's in higher education leadership. During the past two years, Chronister has been actively involved on campus and in the Ada community. She participates in various campus organizations, including CREW, Tiger Ambassadors, Honor Court, Student Senate, Freshman Success Leader, Tiger Leadership, Zeta Tau Alpha and Kinesiology Club. Chronister has been on the President's and Dean's honor rolls, received the Tiger Pride leadership award and been initiated into Alpha Chi, ECU's honor society.
Jones is a senior at USAO majoring in English with minors in Spanish and liberal arts. After graduation, she plans to pursue a law degree. Jones is a member of the Hypatia Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, Magna Cum Laude National Honors Society and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She is a member of the Sprench Club, Drama Club and Secular Student Alliance.
Lunk is majoring in global humanities with a minor in English at RSU. After completing his degree, he hopes to work with the Peace Corps in Eastern Africa in AIDS relief and education. Morgan is studying biology at LU with the intention of furthering her education in physical therapy. She is a recipient of the Edwin P. McCabe II Academic Scholarship.
Morgan is active in the Biology Club and the Scholars Club and is on the President's Honor Roll and Dean's List.
