Krebs, Okla. - The Southeast Oklahoma Legislative Tour was held on Dec. 3, 2024 at the historic Pete’s Place in Krebs, Okla. Representatives from East Central University, Carl Albert State College, Eastern Oklahoma State College, Seminole State College, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Murray State College, Connors State College and Northern Oklahoma College, joined state legislators to discuss the future of higher education and its impact on Oklahoma’s economy and workforce.

The event was hosted by ECU, with President Wendell L. Godwin delivering a warm welcome and leading the introductions. Newly appointed Chancellor Sean Burrage of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education provided keynote remarks, focusing on the future of higher education in Okla.

Saul Padilla, a senior at ECU, inspired attendees with his personal story, highlighting the transformative power of higher education. His heartfelt testimony underscored the need to ensure every Oklahoman has access to quality educational opportunities. “As a first-generation student from a small Southeast Oklahoma town, I attribute my opportunities to higher education. Coming to ECU opened pathways I didn’t think possible. Having traveled with ECU to places like Africa and cities across the U.S., I have gained real world experience and the honor of meeting incredible like-minded people”, said Padilla.

The event also featured remarks from a variety of legislators, including Speaker of the House of Representatives-elect, Kyle Hilbert, who made history this year as the youngest Speaker-elect in the state’s history. Hilbert, along with Representative Ronnie Johns of House District 25 and multiple other senators and representatives, shared their perspectives on the critical role of higher education driving regional and statewide success.

The event continues to serve as a vital platform for dialogue between Oklahoma’s higher education institutions and state leaders, ensuring a collaborative approach to addressing challenges and seizing opportunities in education.
