Three members from the Oklahoma Baptist University Music Faculty will perform a concert on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts on the East Central University campus.

Dr. Randolph Johnson (trombone), Dr. Carlos Feller (flute) and Mary Chung (piano) are scheduled to perform the free concert.

Johnson is assistant professor of music theory and low brass at OBU. He developed a love of music at a young age as he listened to the family perform music together at Christmas time. At the age of 12, Johnson began formal studies of trombone, partly due to the influence of his talented trombone-playing older brother.

Randolph Johnson went on to attend Indiana University as he studied trombone under Carl Lenthe and served as bass trombonist in the Columbus, Indiana Philharmonic. He later completed graduate degrees in music theory at Ohio State University, and studied trombone under Joe Duchi.

During that time, his performance highlights included regularly substituting as bass trombonist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in Ohio; and performing at the 2005 International Trombone Festival in New Orleans as one of the finalists in the Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition.

Feller received his doctorate of music from Florida State University and owns other degrees from The School of Music and Fine Arts of Parana, Brazil and flute performance from the University of Southern Mississippi.

He was a prizewinner in competitions such as the William T. Gower Concerto Competition at USM, performing the J. Ibert Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, state and regional rounds of the Music Teacher National Association, and the Flue Society of Kentucky Young Artist competition.

In 2011, Feller was selected as one of the participants of the prestigious Young Artist Competition, promoted by the National Flute Association.

He is a member of the ensemble Traverso Colore, a chamber group dedicated to historically informed performances on period instruments (baroque flute – traverso). His recent performances with the group included the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Florida Flute Convention, and the 2012 National Flute Association Convention.

Feller, who is an enthusiast of new music for flute, performed at the International Computer Music Conference in New Orleans; International Michel Debost Composition Competition in Curitiba, Brazil and at the XV Biennial Festival of New Music at Florida State University.

He is an adjunct instructor of Fine Arts at OBU, adjunct lecturer of music at Oklahoma City Community College and recently appointed as the new adjunct instructor of flute at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Chung began playing the piano in South Korea and continued with her studies and graduated from the National Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic. She holds a bachelor of music in piano from North Greenville University and degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi.

She is an active soloist and collaborative artist, who has performed both nationally and internationally in Canada, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Brazil.

Her solo awards include first place in the 11th Luis A. Ferre International Piano Competition (Puerto Rico), winner of the William T. Gower Concerto Competition at the University of Southern Mississippi, finalist in the Concerto Competition at the Brevard Music Festival, alternate winner in Mississippi’s Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Auditions, as well as recipient of the MTNA’s Student Achievement Recognition Award.

During her doctoral studies, Chang was the recipient of one of the University of Southern Mississippi Doctoral Assistantship Awards, a competitive award for doctoral students who have demonstrated outstanding work.

She has accompanied numerous degree recitals at USM as well as state, regional and national competitions for both singers and instrumentalists. Chung has also served as a pianist for the Southern Opera, Meistersingers, Oratorio Chorus and others.

In the fall of 2011, Chung joined the faculty at OBU as the new assistant professor of piano.
